Diversity Matters

Diversity Matters: The Importance of Equity over Equality (we are not all the same)

In the realm of societal systems, equality and equity encompass related yet distinct concepts. Equality focuses on providing equal opportunities and support to all segments of society. However, equity takes it a step further by recognizing the varying needs of individuals and offering different levels of support to ensure fairness and better outcomes.

Achieving true equality becomes challenging when we disregard the unique circumstances and backgrounds that individuals bring to the table. Recognizing that each person is inherently different, it becomes crucial to consider diverse needs when aiming for fairness and paving the way for success.

Equity revolves around "leveling the playing field" to foster fairness on the journey to achievement. Unlike equality, which treats everyone the same regardless of their race, gender, social class, and more, equity acknowledges and addresses the natural differences between individuals.

Let's consider education as an example. Students have different learning styles; some thrive with auditory learning, while others grasp concepts better through visual aids. If a teacher solely adopts one teaching style, it will favor students who prefer that particular method. While this approach is equal in terms of treatment, it lacks equity as some students could have excelled if provided with a different teaching style.

Implementing Equitable Practices

Achieving equity can be challenging, primarily because our systems tend to favor the majority, inadvertently leaving some individuals behind. However, by adopting the following practices, we can move closer to equity:

1. Recognize and address individual challenges by offering tailored support.
2. Foster an environment where individuals feel comfortable speaking up and expressing their needs.
3. Cultural Saftey, understand what it means and implement it
4. Promote open communication using appropriate language and tone.
5. Provide equity training to cultivate awareness and understanding.
6. Listen without judgement to feedback given, seek to understand what that individual is saying without your own bias getting in the way.

By embracing equity over equality, we can create a more inclusive and fair society that values the unique strengths and needs of every individual.

TOGETHER, let's pave the way for a brighter and more equitable future.
